Ketone Monitors: Find the Right Fit for Your Journey

Ketone Monitors by Country

Finding a ketone monitor that is available where you live can be confusing. This page brings together a basic introduction to ketone monitoring followed by ketone monitoring options available in different countries, including urine ketone strips, breath meters, blood ketone meters, and continuous ketone monitors.

Do I need to monitor Ketones?

You may be wondering whether you need a ketone meter or monitor to begin a ketogenic lifestyle. The short answer is no—many people choose not to test their ketones. However, measuring can be a helpful tool if you would like a clearer picture of how your body is responding to dietary changes.

Testing may help you identify whether you are producing measurable ketones and notice patterns in your individual response to particular foods, meal timing, fasting, exercise, sleep, or supplements. Rather than striving for a “perfect” number, think of your readings as useful information to help you learn about your own body over time. Choose the method that suits your goals, budget, and level of interest, and remember that consistency and patience matter more than any single reading.

Understanding Ketone Monitoring

There are four ways to measure ketones at home, with each method measuring a different type of ketone:

  • Urine strips measure acetoacetate (which Dr Boz calls “peetones”).
  • Breath meters measure acetone.
  • Blood meters measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB).
  • Continuous ketone monitors measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) in interstitial fluid.

Urine Test Strips

When beginning the KetoCONTINUUM, Dr Boz recommends using urine ketone test strips to identify when your body first enters ketosis. They are inexpensive and useful during the early stages of a ketogenic diet; however, they may become less reliable as your body adapts to using ketones more efficiently.

Check the expiry date before use. The chemical used in urine strips reacts with oxygen, so strips may not work accurately once expired or if the packet has been left open or exposed to air for too long. If no ketones are detected, the strips themselves may be the issue.

Once you are fully keto adapted and not wasting ketones these strips may start showing you a zero result because you are no longer peeing out wasted ketones as your body has adapted and is using them.

Breath meters

These measure acetone and provide a reusable, non-invasive way to monitor ketones. Results can be affected by breathing technique, alcohol, and environmental compounds such as perfume or deodorant.

Blood ketone meters

These are generally the most reliable option, as they measure beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB) directly in the blood. They may be particularly useful when addressing a specific health concern or undertaking more advanced metabolic work on the KetoCONTINUUM.

Continuous Ketone Monitoring

A newer option is the continuous ketone monitor (SiBio Technology), which measures BHB in the interstitial fluid. It provides multiple readings each day, helping you understand your individual response to food, supplements, and overnight patterns—without repeated finger pricks.

Important safety information: Nutritional ketosis, which may occur with carbohydrate restriction or fasting, is not the same as diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). DKA is a serious medical emergency that requires urgent care. If you have diabetes; kidney or liver disease; are pregnant or breastfeeding; or take medication that affects blood glucose, speak with a qualified healthcare professional before making dietary changes.
