August: Taking ketoCONTINUUM Overseas

Keto in New Zealand and Rarotonga

This month has been a wonderful opportunity to reconnect with friends in New Zealand and Rarotonga. We stayed at a wonderful Air BnB called Mountain View Matavera.  If you are wanting to experience authentic Rarotonga living and hospitality I recommend staying with Kathryn.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that staying keto while traveling was not as challenging as I had expected. The experience has given me much more confidence about maintaining this way of eating on future trips.

When eating at airports, I did learn that it can be more cost-effective to look for somewhere serving an all-day breakfast. Bacon and eggs are a satisfying, keto-friendly option that keeps us full and quiets the food noise. Asking for extra butter on the side was helpful too.

Another important tip is to have an honest conversation with your hosts before you arrive. Doing this removed much of the anxiety I had been feeling about meals before our departure. I wanted my hosts to know that I did not expect them to cater especially for me, but also that I hoped they would not be offended if I chose not to serve myself every food on offer.

Travel Tip: Have an honest conversation with your hosts before you arrive

I simply explained that I am following a ketogenic diet to support some personal health goals. Being open and respectful made meals feel more relaxed for everyone, and allowed me to enjoy the time with friends without worrying about food.

My Glucose, Ketone, GKI/Dr Boz Ratio

Each month, my goal is to achieve a DBR of 20 or lower as often as possible. This month, I reached that target on six days, compared with 13 days in July. You will also notice the dates are weird in the graph above, that is due to international travel.

My average DBR and glucose readings were also noticeably higher. I believe this may be connected to being less active during my travels and not using the sauna. Last month, I attended aqua aerobics an average of four times per week and completed at least four 30-minute sauna sessions in an 80°C dry sauna.

This comparison has been a helpful reminder of how movement, heat therapy, and daily routine may influence my metabolic markers.

Weight, Waist Circumference and BMI Progress

You will notice a chunk of data is missing in the above graphic and that is due to traveling and not having access to my scales.

The month started at 74.9 kg (165.1 lb) and finished at 73.4 kg (161.8 lb), a loss of 1.5 kg (3.3 lb).

My BMI moved from 22.9 to 22.4—a change of 0.5.

I started the month with a waist circumference of 83 cm (32.6 in) and at the end of the month it is now 81 cm (31.8 in), that is a change of 2 cm (0.7 in).

Final Thoughts

This month has been surprising from a weight-loss perspective, I did not expect the scales to move considering the big loss from last month.  Interestingly, while I was away on holiday, my weight dropped by one kilogram—but I regained it within five days of returning home.

I think part of this may have been related to indulging in cheese and cream. This has reminded me that, for now, these foods may be better left out of my diet. It also suggests that my digestive system may still need more time to heal.

My Numbers for the month

PS the dates are weird this month due to us travelling and crossing the international date line
